What are Yeast Infections

The topic of yeast infections how to cure them, should be read by everyone who has had to suffer this horrible situation. Just what are yeast infections? This article briefly looks into candida vaginal infection and some of the treatments available.

The fact is yeast, a fungus, is commonly found on human skin and in most areas of the human body. It is normal for yeast to be present in living creatures. The type of yeast found in and on the human body is known as Candida.

Do all women who have yeast present in their vaginal areas have yeast infections?

No, not necessarily.  Statistics say that somewhere between 25 to 50 percent of healthy women will have yeast in the vaginal region but will not be infected. But when inflammation occurs in the vaginal area that usually means that the Candida fungus is plentiful, growing and an infection has been established.

What are some of the causes of yeast infections?

These infections are related to either an increase in volume in the vagina of the already present yeast fungus or to new yeast being introduced in the vaginal area. Commonly this occurs when good bacteria, that is the type that protects the body, is killed by antibiotics. This can happen when a woman is taking antibiotics to eliminate a sinus, urinary, respiratory or other infection or if she is undergoing treatment that includes immunosuppressive drugs.

Women are also susceptible to yeast infections when the inner area of the vagina is damaged or if they have weak immune systems. The former can occur after chemotherapy while the latter can be related to the ingestion of prednisone or other such cortisone-based medicines. Additionally, pregnant women, those with diabetes and woman on oral contraceptive all have an increased risk of developing a Candida yeast infection.

Yeast infections can be present in women who are practicing celibacy, and it is not considered to be a sexually transmitted disease (STD). By the way, women who use vaginal perfume sprays and who use douches also increase the likelihood of developing a yeast infection.

When yeast multiplies it will occupy the sensitive vaginal tissues, causing itching and irritation in the vaginal lining. This condition is referred to as vaginitis.  There is more than one  treatment for vaginitis, which includes over-the-counter, and prescription medicines and creams. However, in an attempt to get their bodies back in synchronization, many women are turning to natural and holistic cures.

Like many other diseases, yeast infections are now being fought through healing systems based on sound nutritional data and focused on what kills candida once and for all. Candida Vaginal Infection

The symptoms of yeast infections can range from reoccurring itching, to burning and general soreness. Candida vaginal infection is a distressing ailment to have to suffer through, however, there are remedies available, over the counter, or there are also natural thrush remedies.

Vaginal yeast infections occur in women when there’s an increase in the volume of yeast that may already be present in the vagina or, when new yeast becomes entrenched in the area. The yeast grows out of control, causing weeks and sometimes months of distress

Although some yeast infection symptoms mirror the indicators of other conditions and are considered to be nonspecific, there are a host of signs when considered together more often than not indicate the presence of an overabundance of the Candida fungus.

Generally speaking, vulvitis, which is the inflammation of the vulva or a woman’s external genital area, is commonly associated with yeast infections. Vaginitis, an inflammation of the vagina, is also a well-known symptom of this condition.

Commonly, women who have the Candida fungus will experience reoccurring itching in the vulvar and/or vaginal region. As the infection worsens, this itching will increase in severity and become more constant. Other symptoms include burning and soreness in the area.

Like the itching, these two symptoms will also become more intense as the infection multiplies. Pain may also be present during urination or intercourse. If all of these conditions occur together, then there’s a good chance that a woman has a yeast infection.

A less common symptom is vaginal discharge. Usually the discharge has a thick consistency and appearance. The discharge, which is odorless, is often said to resemble cottage cheese. Passing pain in the vulvar area may also occur.

Doctors may prescribe antifungal creams that are placed on and in the irritated area and oral medications. Over the counter medicines are also sometimes recommended. If a woman experiences four or more yeast infections in one year that are not connected to the use of antibiotics, she’s considered to have a reoccurring condition. If this happens, often doctors will then recommend more concentrated and aggressive treatment for the infection.

However, often women are looking to utilize holistic cures designed to naturally treat the infection. Such remedies are devoted to ensuring that their bodies are put back into balance. Solutions based on nutrition and the manner in which the body logically works as a natural organism have provided total relief for many sufferers.

The fact is that yeast infections can get in the way of daily living, making it more difficult for women to focus on things that are important to them; work, children, recreation, personal relationships and other areas. Holistic cures are devoted to eradicating the condition forever.

Thrush Home Remedies

The good news is that it is not difficult to find an effective home remedy for yeast infection (also known as Candida or thrush). However, you will also need to take steps to ensure that the infection does not recur.

What is yeast infection?
Candida can occur in any moist, warm area of the body. Most commonly, it will be noticed in the vagina in women, or the diaper area in children. Men can also be affected in the genital area. You will probably feel very uncomfortable with strong itching sensations and possibly pain.

It can also occur in the mouth, causing painful canker-like sores that may bleed when touched. This is most common in babies but is sometimes found in adults too. Occasionally it may be found externally in other areas that tend to collect sweat e.g. armpits, under breasts, toes, top of thighs.

Cause
The cause of yeast infection is a fungus called Candida albicans which is naturally present in the human body. It only causes problems when it multiplies out of control. This is usually caused by an imbalance of the internal flora in the body, which may be due to:

  • very high sugar or fruit consumption
  • diabetes
  • a lowered immune system, e.g. after a cold or other virus, or due to HIV or other immune disorders
  • taking antibiotics
  • taking birth control pills

Treatment
Candida responds well to natural treatments. Most people do not need prescription medicines.

Yogurt can be a very effective treatment for yeast infections in the vagina. You can use a tampon dipped in natural live yogurt. Leaving it for an hour should be effective. Repeat after 12 hours if there is still a problem.

Only use natural, live yogurt with active probiotics (friendly bacteria) and NO sugar, fruit, flavorings or other ingredients. This will restore the balance of internal flora because the friendly bacteria in the yogurt will feed on the excess yeast.

At the same time, be sure to drink plenty of water to flush out the system. Keep the area clean and dry but do not use strong soaps, deodorants, douche products or skin creams. Avoid wearing pantyhose. 100% cotton underwear is best.

Live yogurt may also be effective for outbreaks in the mouth. Eat a little before and after meals, and avoid eating anything containing sugar (including fruit) or yeast and fungi (e.g. most bread, mushrooms, blue cheese).

If using yogurt on other areas, leave it for a few minutes and then wipe off because it is important to keep the area dry. If your baby has a yeast infection in the diaper area, try to change the diaper as soon as it is wet.

Other home treatments for yeast infection include fresh aloe vera gel (apply to the affected area), garlic (eaten raw) and raw vinegar (the kind that has a ‘vinegar mother’). To treat with vinegar, add a cupful to your bath water, and do not use any soap or bath products.

For adults with a Candida infection anywhere, it is a good idea to take a probiotics food supplement or capsule. This is because if you have a yeast infection, you probably also have an excess of Candida in the colon, which you will not be able to feel. If this is not treated it is likely to cause another outbreak soon. Probiotics can restore the balance in the colon. Look for probiotic supplements that guarantee a certain number of live organisms.

Consult a qualified medical practitioner before using any home remedy for yeast infection, to check that it is suitable for you.
